What Makes This Butterfly House Different

💧Teardrop Shape — Steady in the Wind

Tom's signature design. Aerodynamic and stable — no swinging, no stress on the mount. Peggy's oldest house has hung from the same hawthorn since 1997. She has never built another shape.

🫧Built-in Puddler

Butterflies don't drink droplets — they absorb minerals from damp sand. Without this, almost none will move in. The small tray at the base is not decorative.

🚪Easy-Access Back Panel

Opens for cleaning without tools. Keeps the house a functioning habitat year after year — not just decoration after the first season.

🕳️Calibrated Slot Width

Wide enough for butterflies and moths — narrow enough to keep birds and predators out. Not a guess. The result of nearly thirty years of close observation.

🪵Untreated Natural Wood

No varnish, no plastic, no chemical smell that drives insects away. Weatherproof, durable, and blends into any garden like it's always been there.

⏳Limited — No Restock

The arthritis in both hands has made the fine work — fitting the back panel, calibrating the slots — too painful to continue reliably. She built through last winter at a slower pace than she'd like. What's on the shelf now is what's on the shelf. What's finished is finished.

Quality You Can See — And Feel

True craftmanship — not a flat-pack kit, not a machine finish

Built to last for years — solid natural wood that holds up to all weather

No varnish, no chemicals — safe for butterflies, moths, and beneficial insects

Teardrop shape & slot width are no accident — the result of decades of hands-on observation

Every piece is one of a kind — with Peggy's personal touch in every detail

Please note:Every butterfly house is an one-of-a-kind piece. Small variations in grain and wood texture are natural and intentional — that's not a flaw, that's solid wood.

🌿 Expert Perspective

"The backyard garden has become one of the last reliable habitats for many butterfly species across North America. A functional house — with correct slot geometry, a puddling station, and untreated wood — can mean the difference between local extinction and a stable population. The problem is not people's willingness. The problem is that most commercially available butterfly houses simply do not meet the basic biological requirements."

Fill the small tray at the base of the house halfway with plain builder's sand or potting grit. Add enough water to make the sand damp but not flooded — think wet beach sand. Top it up every few days in warm weather. For an extra boost, add a tiny pinch of sea salt to the water occasionally — butterflies actively seek out sodium and it makes the tray even more attractive to them. Tap water works perfectly fine — no need for bottled mineral water.

No trees needed at all. Fences and walls actually work brilliantly — they provide a solid, stable backing that doesn't move in the wind. A south or south-east facing fence or wall at around 4–5 feet off the ground is ideal. The sheltered side of a shed or garage works equally well.

South or south-east facing is best. Butterflies are cold-blooded and need warmth to become active, so a spot that catches the morning and midday sun will always attract the most visitors. Avoid north-facing spots as they stay too cool and damp. A little afternoon shade is fine — it just means the wood stays cooler and lasts longer.

The ButterflyHouse is approximately 8.3 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide. It hangs via a jute rope with carabiner included in the box. The overall hanging height can be adjusted depending on where you fix it.

Of course. We stand behind everything on ItamiHome 100%. If you're not happy, neither are we. Just shoot us an email within 30 days and we'll make it right — no hassle, no headaches.
